Morning is wonderfully manic and creative. Top of my game. I was kicking out a few jams this morning.
Early afternoon is slow and serious. In a bad trough. Not as bad as yesterday, though, because I took a semi-nap. And didn't eat as much for lunch. These were conscious decisions.
Evening is what I make it. I hope to hit the exercise place and get my blood pumping. And go for a bike ride. And get some things done.
I love falling asleep quickly and waking up refreshed. Then to do something with it!

Falling Asleep
I had a terrible time falling asleep last night. That's unusual for me, who usually doze off in a flash. 10 minutes or something.
But the more I thought about it and worried about it last night, the worse it got. So I go to bed at 9:30 and I was still awake around 11:15. Since I get up at 5:30 everyday that meant I lost nearly two hours sleeping. So I'm tired now.
I felt like taking a nap all day, being a little crabby. But I kept resisting and did successfully resist. Now I know I'll sleep well tonight. It's not going to be 10 minutes, I'm thinking. But of course I don't want to jinx myself.
There's still some tasks to do ... take the dog out, a few dishes, the garbage out, clean the cat box, all that fun stuff ... but I can get it accomplished pretty fast.

Suffering Rib Overload Lethargy
I'm getting somewhat better. But let's say close to an hour ago, I was feeling extremely tired.
I usually get that way right after a big meal. I think it's some kind of natural reaction where your belly says it needs all the enzymes your body can spare, so your brain goes wanting and gets tired. Couple that with the fact that I had a challenging intellectual task to perform which was absolutely necessary. That makes me tired too.
Now that task is done, and time is stretching farther out from when I ate, I feel like I'm getting my second wind. But I could still take a serious nap, and just might. Now that I think of it, I got to bed an hour late last night, so I only got seven hours sleep, and I need eight.
Today I grilled racks of baby back ribs. I'm usually such a cheapskate when I go to the grocery store. But yesterday I saw some of these being grilled at a grocery story and knew I would eventually need some. "Eventually" came less than 24 hours later. I went to the meat counter and got a couple of them, one for me and one for the other resident of this house. I believe this is the first time I've ever done this.
Then I thought, surely this big full rack is big enough to stretch out over two meals, since ribs is one of the few foods that is good as leftovers. But when it got right down to it, that plan went out the window because I just kept eating till I had devoured the entire rack. I'm almost ashamed to say it because it sounds extremely wanton. I had my mouth all smeared with KC Masterpiece sauce plus the natural juices of the ribs, accompanied by some Bush's baked beans [If Jay Bush's dog Duke would like to call me with the recipe, I won't sell or give it to anyone else.]
Oh, so I felt a mixture of extremely good and extremely overloaded. The lethargy arose in me like a mighty force. And I was looking to get my challenging intellectual task done but really felt no energy to do so ... until it was about half over. Then the pieces started falling into place, giving me the renewed energy to still be sitting here writing about it all these minutes later. Who knows what else I could accomplish?
Me, me, me, it's all about me. And my two enormous plates of ribs.

Dream Away All My Troubles
I've been having a nice time sleeping lately. I mean the normal sleep a guy gets at night. I haven't been sleeping through the day, anything unusual, an occasional nap on Sunday afternoon.
But as for sleeping at night, I finally decided I need a pretty solid eight hours. I feel spacey and weird after too many days cutting it short. So I've reconciled myself to the idea that this has to be done, even though at certain times in my life it has seemed like a waste. I'm envious of people who say they sleep five-six hours a day and feel fine. If only ...
OK, but since I get up at 5:30 a.m., that means going to bed at 9:30 at night. Meaning I'm missing a lot of interesting stuff on TV that I used to watch. 9:30 is almost there and I'm hustling around doing all the stuff I need to get done so I can be in bed more or less at that time. Usually I fall asleep very quickly, generally by 9:45 or 10:00 at the latest; it all depends.
The nice time I mentioned is this, that I wake up numerous times throughout the night, look at the clock, and fall back to sleep immediately. I like doing that, because sometimes I'll feel like the whole night is gone, then I'll look at the clock and only a couple hours has passed. Meaning I still have lots to go. I did that last night. I woke up at 1:30 or 2:30 and thought hmmm. Then right back to sleep. Then when my alarm was about to go off I woke up again and it was 5:26, and I thought well, it doesn't work every time. Eventually your bonus rounds run out!
But I'm very faithful at getting up, since I can objectively say to myself, it was eight hours!

Eckhart Tolle - Part 1
I took a nap today, and woke up with what I'm calling "interesting fears." Without saying everything about my existence and what's coming up (all quite benign), I get a few worries that creep up on me. So I'm busy being busy in my mind about that. It's dwelling on the future instead of the now, to use the little I know of Eckhart Tolle's vocabulary.
But after I wake up, and it's a nice, though blustery, Saturday afternoon, and it's a little warm, and I'm all alone except for the pets, and there's no sound, it's like a thought morass. A swamp up there with interesting places to slip in.
Using the word "interesting" two times like that is itself interesting, to me. Because I was listening to a CD lecture by this same Eckhart Tolle while laying down, willing to doze off, which happened. The CD -- I'll eventually listen to it again because I dozed off maybe 20 minutes into it -- was the first of a series of talks given at Findhorn Retreat. And he uses the word "interesting," right at the beginning, as what their time at Findhorn won't be. There's an audience there and they laugh. Now, since I have earbuds I can hear everything, I'm listening for the laughter of the audience. My mental picture of them is of people wanting to go along with what Eckhart has for them, yet also looking for the interesting. Hence, every little titter in the audience appears to be someone looking for a reason to stimulate an outburst of laughter from the others and an encouragement to Eckhart Tolle to say other funny things, thereby making it interesting.
But he says at the beginning it won't be interesting, and the reason exactly why that is is escaping me in part. Let me hack it out: because interesting means analysis, like analyzing an oak tree instead of being with the oak tree. But what's wrong with analysis? I guess it's a mental digging (future oriented) instead of a mental awareness (present oriented), thereby postponing the joy/stillness instead of being in the already-always-there stillness. The topic for the retreat, I think, is stillness.
Right at the beginning, Eckhart Tolle has this very low-key delivery, and I'm thinking, Yeah! But then it becomes more conventional a presentation. But like I said, I'm busy dozing off not too far into it, waking up once and it's over with, dozing back off, then waking up with "interesting fears." I might have exorcised some of them by writing this.
